Louisiana’s Governor

Governor John Bel Edwards grew up in Amite, Louisiana and attended the United States Military Academy at West Point after graduating top of his class at Amite High School. Edwards graduated from West Point in 1988 as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army and served actively for 8 years. Edwards settled down, got married, had three children, and earned a law degree from Louisiana State University.

Edwards opened up his own civil law practice in hometown, Amite. He was later elected by the people of House District 72 into the Louisiana House of Representatives. He served for eight years until being elected governor in November of 2015.

Governor John Bel Edwards is unique in the since that he ran for governor by using “common sense and compassion”. Although he is a democrat, he compared some of his views to Trump. He has received backlash from progressive causes because of his support of gun rights and restrictions on abortion. He represents more traditional Democratic policies, but has also won conservative support due to work with Trump.

Edwards signed one of the country’s most limiting abortion laws and provided alternatives to Planned Parenthood. Unlike national democrats, Edwards supports gun rights, but believes in making restrictions and doing better background checks on individuals who choose to carry them. He is also for more ethanol and more alternative fuels, which largely impacts Louisiana because of how large the oil field business is.
